Benchmarks and methodology

What MemOS measures, how the retrieval numbers are produced, and why end-to-end scores are reported separately.

Memory benchmarks are easy to misread. This page separates what MemOS measures from what it does not, and gives the exact numbers with their caveats.

Two tracks

TrackWhat it measuresJudge
Retrieval-onlyDid the right evidence come back?None; evidence IDs
End-to-endDid the model answer correctly? An LLM judge

MemOS publishes retrieval-only numbers by default. They are deterministic and reproducible. End-to-end numbers depend on the reader model, the judge model, and the judge prompt, so they are reported separately and never merged into the retrieval table.

Retrieval results

BenchmarkScoreConditions
LongMemEval-S, full 50099.4% Hit@20 · 97.8% all-evidence@20one node per session, nomic-embed-text, contextual header, no reranker
ConvoMem, 387 scored91.0% Hit@10 · 89.4% evidence recall@10message evidence, all-minilm, contextual header
LoCoMo, convs 0–179.8% Hit@10 · 75.9% evidence recall@10304 questions, same embedder, previous-turn context
LoCoMo, 1,986 questions64.1% Hit@10full set, retrieval-only
HotPotQA distractor100% Hit@10 · 96.3% evidence recall@10500 validation questions

Every number is scored by evidence-ID matching. No LLM judge is in the loop.

End-to-end is reported separately: 78% on a 50-question LongMemEval-S sample, self-judged with the same model. That is not comparable to vendor numbers produced with a gpt-4o judge.

Why the numbers are not directly comparable

  • Recall is not accuracy. A system can retrieve the right evidence and still answer wrong. MemOS reports both retrieval and, separately, a small self-judged end-to-end sample.
  • LoCoMo has a ceiling. An independent audit found 6.4% of the answer key is wrong, so a perfect system caps out near 93.6%, not 100%.
  • The judge is lenient. The standard LoCoMo judge accepts a large share of intentionally wrong but topically adjacent answers. Judge-prompt changes alone have moved scores by 40 points.
  • top_k can bypass retrieval. If top_k is larger than the number of sessions, the whole corpus is in the candidate pool. MemOS reports the session granularity and the exact command.

What we do not claim

MemOS does not claim a state-of-the-art end-to-end QA score. The retrieval numbers are strong and reproducible; the end-to-end measurement is a separate, smaller sample. Treat vendor numbers that do not disclose the harness as marketing.

Reproduce it

The harness lives in the repository:

# Retrieval-only, no API key
pnpm bench:longmemeval:retrieve
pnpm bench:locomo:retrieve
pnpm bench:convomem

# End-to-end, needs a reader and judge
pnpm bench:longmemeval
pnpm bench:locomo

Artifacts and per-category breakdowns are committed under docs/artifacts/. The commands, caveats, and retractions are in benchmarks/README.md.

The open leaderboard

The leaderboard spec defines a submission format that requires:

  • the harness and dataset version,
  • the judge model and prompt hash for end-to-end runs,
  • at least three runs with standard deviation,
  • per-question artifacts,
  • and a reproduction command.

The goal is not to declare a winner. It is to make every published number checkable.
